Cultural Changes Resulting From World War II
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining the cultural changes ushered in by the actions and consequences of World War II. Hundreds of thousands of women had gone to work in the nation's factories that had been dedicated to war materiel production and only grudgingly gave up those jobs for returning veterans. They had become accustomed to the wages and fulfillment of outside employment and set out to regain it in their own right. African Americans were granted the right to vote in 1944 because of their overwhelming willingness to fight and die for the country that had taken little notice of their existence, and the GI Bill provided access to college education to thousands who otherwise would not have been able to attend. Modern Patriarchy
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page paper. Patriarchy progressively has moved from the realms of anthropological and sociological 'quirk' to that of full-blown conspiracy, according to some modern authors. What these extreme feminist authors have failed to consider, however, is that patriarchy as a cultural norm seems perfectly natural in the cultures in which it is practiced, and that it is only those of other parts of the world who have any complaints. Even though patriarchy is ingrained in many cultures of the world, some of those cultures are facing the necessity of reassessing their positions, forced not by any commonweal thinking, but by physical realities. Somalia is used as an example. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Collapse of the Mayan Civilization
[ send me this paper ]
The Mayans had a strong and complex civilization from A.D. 250 to A.D. 900. At the peak of their strength, between 800 and 900 A.D., this great empire suddenly collapsed. Archeologists have debated about the causes of the collapse; with overpopulation, disease, insect plagues, peasant revolts against the ruling classes (civil wars), and climate change being among the conditions theorized as being responsible. Warfare leading to the balkanization of the culture is said to have effected the fall as well. Recently, the discovery of a major volcanic eruption has increased the probability of weather playing a large role in the collapse. Beginning around 800 A.D. the Yucatan suffered a severe 200-year drought. It is likely that a combination of all of these influences came together to bring about the fall of the Mayan Empire. This 10 page paper examines the possible causes, with an emphasis on warfare and drought. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Are Non-Verbal Communications In-Born or are They Learned ?
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page look at non-verbal communications (i.e., gestures, motions, batting eyelashes, etc;) and the importance of realizing that different groups of people may interpret them in different ways. The primary focus of this particular report, however, is to analyze the controversy over whether most non-verbal communication activities are in-born traits or learned activities. Various issues and studies are explored to help answer this very question and arguments seem to lean strongly in favor of the 'in-born side' for certain non-verbal communications while some lean strongly in favor of the 'learned' side for other examples of non-verbal communication. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
