A Review of "Black Is the Color of the Cosmos : Essays on Afro-American Literature and Culture" by Charles T. Davis
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page review of the work of one of the most effective black writers of the twentieth century. A collection of a variety of Davis' most important essays, the book serves as a much needed compendium of the work of this tremendously important black author. Starting with an examination of the debates which encompassed black literary circles of the 1960s and 1970s, Davis compares the perspectives of a variety of different writers and academics before turning his attention specifically to the black slave narratives and then to Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Jean Toomer, Robert Hayden, and other key figures in black history. The most interesting aspect of this book by far, however, is Davis' attention to the slave narrative as a critical component of black written history. No additional sources are listed.

A Review of "Race Matters" by Cornel West
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of race relations in the United States. Contends that the subject of race relations is a key philosophical issue precipitated in the United States largely by the presence of African Americans. It is an issue which has been broached by many black leaders of our past, and indeed the leaders of today and our future. Cornel West is one of those leaders. He is, in fact, one of the most eloquent and influential black writers of contemporary times. West views white America as an oppressor of black America, an oppressor which operates through daily attacks on black attributes such as intelligence, beauty, ability, and character. Central to this racial bias is economics and the capitalist system which emphasizes individuality over community and competition over cooperation. No additional sources are listed.

A Review of W.E.B. DuBois' "The Souls of Black Folks"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the cultural environment in which "The Souls of Black Folk" was written and the message which the author sought to convey. Contends that the general public at this time was not very tolerant of blacks in general and W.E.B. DuBois was not only black, he had an impressive education and was considerably influential. Ironically, these same qualities somewhat alienated W.E.B. DuBois even from some of his own people. Even in this historical context, however, "The Souls of Black Folks" was regarded as a beautiful insight into the African American culture. No additional sources are listed.

A Social and Demographic Overview of the Old South
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page analysis of the social and demographic features of the old South. The author contends that the sociocultural region we know as the “Old South” is formed much more around common ideologies than it is any specific state boundaries. The ideologies which distinguish the Old South stretch back into the earlier years of our history in which slavery played a central role in both the economy and the culture of our young nation. The institution of slavery in itself, however, varied over the Old South. This variation is due to the variation in people and circumstance. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

A. Phillip Randolph
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper that looks at the career of this African American leader. Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was the most significant civil rights leader to emerge from the labor movement (Stein, 1991). His name is not as well-known as that of Martin Luther King, however, Randolph was a principal motivator of his generation and a pioneer in obtaining rights for black Americans. His career as a political activist begins early in the twentieth century, decades before the civil rights movement and examination of his work suggests that his early successes in gaining rights for black Americans laid the necessary groundwork upon which 1960s civil rights movement was built. Addressing Outreach for Pregnant African American Women in Oakland County, Michigan
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing whether Pontiac, Michigan should institute a program targeting the city's African American population of women of child-bearing age. Infant mortality within this population is higher than that of any other ethnic group, and that within Pontiac is greater than Michigan's average. The paper examines results of California - where activity is supported by policy - and North Carolina, where effort is limited to effort only. It is California that has the greatest success, for it allows the working poor also to have access to the medical services needed for prenatal care. The paper suggests that Pontiac take the same approach, and market the program more through direct contact in public places than through printed material that all women may not be able to read.
