Children Should Not Be Punished As Adults
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper which argues that children, or young adults, should not be treated as adults in relationship to the legal system and law regarding punishment. Children are children and regardless of their crime, they are not mature enough to understand the real consequences of their actions. One argument given relates to the fact that the prison system will only further their life of crime, and therefor has proven to ineffective in deterring crime. In addition, an alternative is illustrated, whereby these violent children can be sentenced to their own institution that is not part of the average detention center, not part of the adult prison system. Crime And Youth: How Family Relations Contribute To The Development
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. Figuring out what makes people commit crimes has been the focus for ages of civilized societies. From the ancient Greeks who first introduced the concept of law to the twenty-first century, myriad theories have been developed as a way in which to explain how and why some people fall into criminal behavior. One of the most common threads to appear is how much impact family relations has upon whether or not adolescents become criminally active. Indeed, familial structure has undergone a tremendous shift over the past half century as mothers went to work, fathers held two jobs and children were left to learn right and wrong from the television. Abuse, neglect and incompetent parenting methods represent several significant reasons why adolescents may be pushed toward criminal activity. Even religion can cultivate intensely conflicting emotions that drive juveniles to crime. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Critical Analysis of Two Articles Relating to Juvenile Criminal Justice: The Effectiveness of Juvenile Boot Camps (Shock-Incarceration Programs)
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper giving a critical analysis of two articles in the assessment of juvenile boot camps’ effectiveness. Two articles are examined on the effectiveness of juvenile boot camps within the justice system: B. Zaehringer’s work in 1998 entitled “Juvenile boot camps: cost and effectiveness vs. residential facilities” (Koch Crime Institute White Paper Report); and, S.X. Zhang’s 1998 article “In search of hopeful glimpses: a critique of research strategies in current boot camp evaluations” (Crime and Delinquency 44(2), 314-334). Zaehringer’s study used national and research intensive data to support his conclusions and analysis of the system which in order to improve its effectiveness would need a much more comprehensive focus on aftercare and rehabilitation. Zhang’s article studied the effectiveness of the studies themselves, excluding Zaehringer’s, but admits he was not comprehensive in the studies that he surveyed. He in turn reported that the overall effectiveness of the boot camp system has not been proven despite the positive goals set by the boot camp administrators. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
