The Environment and Japan:the Ashio Copper Mine
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages. This interesting paper focuses on the impact of Tanako Shozo, Japan's first environmentalist, and the Ashio Copper Mine. In 1885 it was recognized that pollution from the mine had become widespread when people noticed thousands of fish in the Watarase River were dead because of water pollution. Additionally, sludge from the mine caused heavy flooding and the amount of metal pollution in the river depleted the rice production. Environmentalists such as Tanaka Shozo show us that while environmental laws are essential, there are still other ways to accomplish the many goals that still have to be attained. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

The Need For Regulatory Reform For Agriculture In The South
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. As the world looks ahead to ensure the availability of its global food supply, talk of implementing regulatory reform in the South has become more and more pertinent. While a number of regulatory reform acts have been utilized in the past, there still appears to remain a need for even better improvements and stricter control. In order to address the issues of cost, profits and all that falls in between, the southern agricultural industry must become amenable to such policy changes that would ultimately influence how farmers incorporate pesticides, manure storage and disposal, price support programs, marketing orders, land use and subsidized water prices. A Strategic Critique of Exxon Research
[ send me this paper ]
This 9 page report discusses the strategies applied by Exxon Oil company’s research and engineering division. The way in which complex systems evolve -- in nature, in politics, in the human body, in corporations -- has become, to a great degree, a science unto itself. Such study allows scientists and researchers in numerous disciplines to formulate theories about how complex systems evolve. It doesn't matter whether the system is a flock of birds, a microchip or the stock market, so long as it constantly adapts to changes in its environment. Applying such thinking to an entity such as an oil company’s research group illustrates the ways in which new thinking is required for the new millennium. Bibliography lists 20 sources.
