How Hitler Designed "Mein Kampf" As A Blueprint For What Would Soon Follow
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Hitler's orchestration of Mein Kampf was done in such a way that it served as the precursor for the massive human devastation that followed. Within the pages of Mein Kampf resides Hitler's espousing of ethnic segregation, racial inferiority and the idea of a supreme human form. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Human Rights Abuses in Film
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the role the events portrayed in 'Schindler's List' and 'The Killing Fields' have served to shape awareness of human rights issues in the late years of the 20th century. It cannot be the place of some self-appointed body to attempt to dictate to any nation how it should collectively think, or what its philosophy should be. Human rights overseers need to ensure they are not forcing their own cultural values on another society, but neither do we need to be shy about stepping forward to halt blatant abuses of human rights. The Holocaust and Cambodia's S-21 provide the evidence. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Immigrant Views on Being American
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page essay that explores 2 works. Yoshiko Uchida's memoir Desert Exile (1982) and Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers (1925). In these books, readers encounter the accounts of two women, each descended from first generation immigrants to America, each facing prejudice and obstacles and each coming to terms with the difficulty of being of ethnic origin in Protestant, Anglo American culture. Uchida's book is a personal memoir and while Yezierska's text is fictional, it nevertheless draws on her own Polish background and accurately reflects Jewish immigrant life in the first half of the twentieth century. While the two works address different eras and different ethnicity, they are similar in that each woman comes to terms with her own definition of what it means to be American. Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph Of The Will": Documentaries And Objectivity
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Documentaries are often assumed to be objective renderings of reality, yet they invariably offer a specific point of view. This point is clearly illustrated in Leni Riefenstahl's film Triumph of the Will, one of the most morally and legally controversial documentaries ever made. Chronicling the 1934 session of Nazi Party Congress, Triumph of the Will has long been interpreted as propaganda for Hitler's reign, which caused it to be banned for more than three decades. Riefenstahl, who was commissioned by Hitler to cover the events, captured such power and intimidation that her film was feared by all who experienced it, inasmuch as it presented myriad issues that could not easily be dismissed. For example, was Triumph of the Will truly Nazi propaganda or rather a propaganda film given life by a non-Nazi woman? Indeed, the line was thin with regard to the underlying objective, an element that more than angered hierarchical Nazi propagandists. No additional sources cited.

Levi & De Bernieres/On War

A 5 page essay that address two novels. The writer argues that Primo Levi in his novel If Not Now, When? And Louis de Bernieres with his novel Cordelli's Mandolin present two narratives in which the protagonists are engaged in warfare, but are basically opposed to war. In exploring how these two men reconcile their beliefs with their activities, as well as how they maintain their connection to life, these authors each makes a profound statement concerning how humanity can exist within the framework of war. Maus & Schinder's List
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares Art Spiegelman's Maus (volumes I and II) and Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List, which are both visually representations of the Holocaust. In both cases, the creators of these works employ the specific properties of their medium to better convey their personal vision of the meaning and reality of the horrors of genocide. Spiegelman's visual form is the graphic novel (the generic term of "comic book" seems hardly applicable). He employs text (often in the form of "bubbles" that show what characters think of say), but in addition to images, dialogue boxes and commentary, there are also maps of Poland and the camps, diagrams of hideouts, and real photographs from Spiegelman's family album. Spielberg, of course, employs cinematic tools, using sight, color, sound, music and visual effects to convey his personal sense of the tragedy. No additional sources cited.

Moral Indifference, The Holocaust & The Directive for Genocide
