Women in Colonial Latin America
[ send me this paper ]
a 6 page research paper which examines the role of women in colonial Latin America. The colonial world of Latin America was intrinsically different from that of North America and this difference had a tremendous impact on the women of Latin America at that time. Although North America was rich in natural resources, the natives of North America did not have the gold of the Incas or the Aztecs. Consequently, the Europeans that came to North America's shores came to colonize-they brought women with them. Those early Europeans, specifically the Spanish, that came to Latin America did so solely for the purposes of exploitation, not for colonization. Because of this, the Spanish conquerors typically did not bring women with them from Europe. The writer argues that the native women in colonial Latin America were viewed by Europeans as simply one more resources that they could exploit. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Wiarda (1987) and Fast Forward, Latin America on the Edge of the 21st Century (1997). A through overview of each text is offered, and then the texts are contrasted for quality and content, which are--in both cases -- very good. However, the final assessment in regards to these texts is that their greatest drawback, in regards to applicability by the reader, is that neither book addresses current Latin American realities as one is 17 years out-of-date and the other is 7. Aymara: Cultural Identity Disintegration?
[ send me this paper ]
36 pages in length. The disintegration of cultural identity for Chile and Bolivia's indigenous Aymara reflects yet another cog in the wheel of global progress, which for some is no progress at all. The inherent struggle for cultural survival is not a new challenge for the Aymara peoples; however, the perpetual fight against succumbing to complete disintegration has become more and more difficult to overcome due to factors of globalization, technological advancement and the blatant circumvention of human rights. According to an Aymara man: "This is a fight between two cultures. One is a culture of life. One is a culture of death. In the West they seem to have lost the value of this culture of life, which has not been totally lost in Latin America." Bibliography lists 27 sources.
