Pythagoras / The Philosopher, The Mathematician
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page account of what is known of the life and scientific and mathematical contributions of Pythagoras. Particular attention is paid to the religious beliefs of his Pythagorean Order and how their beliefs has made it difficult to get a true understanding of Pythagoras' contributions to science and mathematics. A summary of the contributions which have been attributed to Pythagoras is included. Emphasis is placed on the Pythagorean Theorem, the principles which determine the concordant scale, and musical spheres. Information is also provided regarding current thought regarding Pythagoras' beliefs concerning vegetarianism, the human and animal soul and reincarnation. Quantitative Measures at Carstab
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing how the use of statistics and probability can be applied in making business decisions that affect the bottom line. The example used is a chemical manufacturer (Carstab) that produces a product needed by many customers but needed by one in higher grade. Most of the lots of product that Carstab makes is acceptable to this single customer, but nearly half are not. Carstab develops a pretest resulting in indicating that 90% of what the company sends the customer will be acceptable. The paper discusses this scenario, along with a "what if" discussion of a different set of probability values. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Should Acme Doors Eliminate Inspection?
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper presenting a business statistics exercise. Acme Doors manufactures garage doors that have been found to vary widely in final weight in the plant, a matter that can affect longterm performance and customers’ views of the level of quality of the product. A tenet of TQM is that quality increases as manufacturing efforts are increasingly brought within statistical control. A study sampling final product indicates that Acme’s manufacturing process will need to be refined before it eliminates product inspection in trying to implement TQM in its production activities. Includes 2 tables and 4 charts; PowerPoint presentation available. Bibliography lists 23 sources.

Space Age Mathematics Education
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper discussing the relationship
between reforms in math education in the 1960s and 1970s and conditions in the space
program. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, and then was the first to put a man in
space in 1961. Alan Shepard became the first American in space only three weeks later, but he
did not orbit the Earth as the Russian astronaut did. Technological innovation and national
embarrassment gave impetus to the change in math education in the early 1960s and the shift
to New Math, but we allowed the pendulum to swing too far in the US. Further technological
innovation and the reality of poor performance on an international level now is giving impetus
to additional change, one approaching more of a middle ground. The paper also discusses the
international interest in math education reform beginning in 1958. Bibliography lists 17
sources; includes an outline of the paper.
