Extreme Mental Illness And Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
[ send me this paper ]
19 pages in length. To understand the ongoing controversy surrounding ECT, it is important to gain a working knowledge of the procedure, indications, risks and common misconceptions about this alternative approach to treating severe mental illness that has been in place for a number of decades. The process of ECT has undergone such significant modifications that it hardly resembles what by today's standards is considered archaic application. That contemporary approaches to ECT have wholly metamorphosed - and in some cases exorcised - the negative components once attributed to this controversial therapy lends considerable credibility to recent scientific research that supports it as being viable, safe and humane. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

Fear Of Flying
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Human nature harbors myriad anxieties that make it difficult for some people to make it through the day. While some angst is kept in check by virtue of a relatively low level of anxiety, others are full-blown phobias that serve to paralyze their victims when it comes to confronting that particular fear. One of the most common phobias is fear of flying, which experts contend have a great deal to do with the complete control passengers give up to pilots, weather and mechanical functioning that manifest in such psychological and biological ways as panic attacks, claustrophobia, nausea and embarrassment. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Discussion in Relation to the Criminal Justice System
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing fetal alcohol syndrome, its incidence, cost to society and relation in the criminal justice system. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE), Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND), Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD) and alcohol-exposed Static Encephalopathy (SE) are all terms for the defect which occurs to a child when his or her mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy. It is estimated that 1 in every 10 children born have some form of this disorder which can result in mild learning disabilities to major mental, physical and developmental disorders. Children with an alcohol related disorder may or may not have physical defects and because of this most go undetected at birth. Youths with FAS exhibit impulsive and anti-social behavior, lower IQs, attention deficit, emotional instability, impairment in judgment and little awareness or consequences of their behavior among many other factors; all of which can lead them into criminal behavior. As a result, over 55% of youths and adults with FAS have spent time in a criminal facility; a fact which many critics within the legal system state may go against some of the fundamental principles of the legal system in which people must understand the rules in society and understand that the rules must be obeyed. From another legal aspect, legal critics also argue that pregnant women who drink could be considered as committing child abuse; an argument which has led some states to impose involuntary treatment and confinement of drinking women during the course of a pregnancy in order to protect the unborn child. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Forensic Psychology: Issues of Morality and Justice
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page overview of the role forensic psychologists play in issues of morality and justice. Notes that in effect forensic psychology is a court of law, a system designed to weigh the mental processes of some against those of the masses. Psychology is really a means of justification, the presentation of evidence or facts which support our views or beliefs. This "evidence" or "fact" varies considerably, however, according to what arena it is presented. A rigid testing and diagnostic regime is therefore critical to justice. The issues of morality and justice are integrally tied to the “court of law” of forensic psychology. It is by gauging one’s morality and concept of justice, in fact, that allows us in many instances to distinguish normal from aberrant. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Freud as a Novelist
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page paper which discusses the concept of Freud's work reading like a novel. The works of Freud's that are used to illustrate this are his studies involving "Rat Man" (Ernst Lanzer) and "Dora" (Ida Bauer). Freud was incredibly opinionated and in his case studies he often put in his own words, rather than the words of the subject, attempting to focus the text on one aspect or another of the study. In doing so, in light of the unique characters he studied, much of his case studies seemed to read like novels. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Hervey Cleckly and Psycopathic Behaviour
[ send me this paper ]
Hervey Cleckley (1941) wrote in The Mask of Insanity a plea for the public to try and understand a range of antisocial personality disorders that he referred to as psychotic “for want of a better word.” The definition of various “high order” psychotic disorders continues today, many giving credit to Cleckley for his original use of the word psychotic in a recognized and accepted treatise (Lively, 1998). With the categorization of high order psychotic behaviour, it would behoove society to take note of Cleckley’s arguments. However, society continues to ignore his basic tenets that psychotic behavior is not clinically treatable. 4 References. jvCleckl.rtf
