Public Speaking: Situation That Did Not Go Well And How It Was Handled
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. I walked up to the podium, notes in hand, ready to conquer the crowd of five hundred people that eagerly waited for what I had to say. The topic was one with which I was intimately familiar and had been immersed in for most of my life, so there was no danger of confusing the facts or misspeaking on the data. In short, this was to be a very simple oration unworthy of any unease. However, that was the logical side of my brain; the emotional side, on the other hand, was a complete and utter mess. The writer recounts a harrowing public speaking experience and how it was addressed to improve for future speaking engagements. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture" - Experience And Failure
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. When Randy Pausch said "experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted" in The Last Lecture speech he gave shortly before his death, his intention was to get people thinking about the benefit of failure. It is not that the late professor wanted others to make a habit out of not being successful but rather he valued failure as a key learning tool in the lessons of life. His message in short was that from failure comes enlightenment. Most people are taught to avoid defeat and disappointment because it somehow equates to less than a winning character. Pausch wanted to make an obvious point about how absolutely off the mark that type of indoctrination is to the quest for achievement, so he incorporated the aspect of failure into his class curriculum by awarding one student team a stuffed penguin who took the greatest risk and experienced the greatest failure. Symbolic of Pausch's penchant for empowering others, the penguin stood for the need to try and fail in order to succeed in life. No additional sources cited.

Risk Taking
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. What is the definition of a risk taker? Is it someone who abandons all commonsensical thought and puts his life on the line? Is it an individual who ignores the inherent quest for survival to challenge her mortality? Or is it a person who steps beyond his or her own boundaries of safety as a means by which to prove that one can incorporate the extreme with the ordinary? Indeed, risk taking represents a bit of all of these definitions, inasmuch as it represents the need to break free of conventional restraints.
