The paper looks at the way demand is created for hotel accommodation through a range of factors, such as price, advertising, complimentary and competing factors, disposable income and even fashions and tends. Holding a large sporting event such as the Olympic Games impacts on al of these factors and also create new and different pressures. Literature looking at the impact on the hotel industry is sparse, and is contradictory, some indicates short and long term benefits, and others look at long term costs and the negative results. A third perspective argues that the result depend on the city and the level of maturity in the tourism industry. This paper looks at the various ideas and then compares data taken form the hotel industries in Sydney and Salt Lake City to assess the short and long term impacts. Both indicate an increases in demand in the years leading up to the games and fall in demand and income in the years after the games but the levels of gain and loss are very divergent.
