Use Of Nature As Escape
[ send me this paper ]
The writing of the early part of this century and late nineteenth century was often defined as 'modern' by way of the propensity of the authors of that era to address the underlying psychological motivations for behavior. Unfortunately, this often resulted in a self analysis that was unbearable to the character and the inner conflict ended in cessation of life, lifestyle and, or the person as they had been before self evaluation. This 6 page paper argues that in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway's The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Miss LonelyHearts and Day of the Locust by Nathaniel West, The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner and Call It Sleep by Henry Roth, nature plays a pivotal role as symbol and in reality in the examination of the self and is used as an escape from the lives and conflicts of the characters.
